Newport News Master Gardeners

Welcome to the Newport News Master Gardeners Website!

We are an educational, non profit service organization which renders non-biased, sound horticultural information to the community.  Working with the Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE), our objectives are accomplished through the volunteer efforts of our members.  We are a service organization of trained volunteers.  This website is one of those efforts.  We invite you to learn all about us by exploring the links at the top of this page.

This site also offers gardening tips that are constantly added and updated.  You may also use our "Contact Us" page to email us concerning your gardening questions or call our local Extension Office at 757-591-4838.  Someone will contact you as soon as possible.  Here is a map to our office.

Visit our Resources page.  There you will find articles and links that every gardener can use.  You will also find helpful garden tips and possible answers to any of your questions.  Master Gardeners may visit this page for links to files and learning modules.

The city of Newport News is now offering you a chance to participate in a Community Garden program for free!  You will be assigned your own plot and can grow your own vegetables.  Click here for an application and more information.

We are no longer accepting applications for this year's Master Gardener training session.  Please visit the About Us page for more information.

Congratulations to our new interns!

Our newest feature is a Monthly Garden Tips page that will be constantly updated to include gardening tips by the month.

Visit our Events page for items of interest that you would like to attend.  Again this year, we will feature Rain Barrel Workshops!  Call 591-4838 to register now!  This page also includes the schedule for the "Grin and Grow Garden" program that is great for kids and parents to participate in together.

This past September, we hosted our Go Green Expo 2011 event...a "must attend" occasion for all gardeners.  We are pleased to announce that the event was an astounding success!  Follow this link (Go Green Expo 2011) for the list of the vendors and participants and to see a video of the event! The event flyer is here.  Look for us to continue sponsoring this event again in 2012!

Check out the Kids Corner for gardening projects you can do with children.  This is a great way to introduce the importance of our environment to a child!

The Peninsula Chapter of the Master Naturalist is now accepting applications for training.  Visit their website for more information and to download the application.

Tip of the Week
If the ground is workable at all (not frozen and not too wet), now is an excellent time to turn the soil.  Not only will this expose insect eggs to the effects of winter and hungry birds, the freezing will help to break apart heavy clods of dirt.
