Rain Barrel Workshops are designed to educate homeowners in the importance of water conservation and recycling while creating a rain barrel for use in their home landscape and gardens. Our workshops, held throughout the year, feature experts from Newport News Waterworks, Newport News Recycling Division, and Newport News Extension Master Gardeners.

Plant Swap and Mobile Help Desk

Do you love plants?! Join us for a community plant swap at the Main Street Library. Bring a plant, take a plant....but don't let that keep you from coming if you don't have a plant to share!

Bring your herbs, vegetables, annuals, native plants, shrubs, trees, houseplants to share.

Newport News Master Gardeners will be set up with resources to share, like helping you determine the best place for your new plant! We are always thrilled to answer your questions, hear your gardening stories, and help you find your green thumb. This is a family friendly event!

Join us at Pearl Bailey Library on Saturday, May 16 with Master Gardener Christina Verderosa to learn about Native Plants in our area! Do you want to restore biodiversity, protect the planet, or reduce the cost of lawn maintenance?

This is the time to learn about the importance of native plants! We will discuss why native plants are critical for the environment, as well as share alternatives for commonly planted ornamental plants.

Adults 18+, registration not required. Free and open to the public.

Fall plant sale

Join the Newport News Master Gardener Association for our annual Fall Plant Sale on Saturday, September 26, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This is a one-day-only event and a wonderful opportunity to find unique plants while supporting local horticultural education.
 

Our annual fall sale is one of the best opportunities of the year to shop for native trees and shrubs, which thrive when planted in autumn as roots establish in cooler weather. We’ll also have a great selection of:

Native plugs & pollinator favorites (plug list coming in August)
Larger native plants
Houseplants
Ferns & hostas
Vegetables
Specialty garden finds

Expert Gardening Help On Site
Our Help Desk and Design Desk will be available during the sale to answer gardening, landscaping, and plant selection questions.

Proceeds from all plant sales support horticulture grants for Newport News public and private schools, as well as Master Gardener educational programming throughout our community.
