As an educational outreach component of Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE), the Extension Master Gardener program brings the resources of Virginia's land-grant universities - Virginia Tech and Virginia State University - to the people of the Commonwealth. All Volunteers are trained and have a minimum of 50 hours of horticultural classes. They in turn, give back 50 hours and more of volunteer community service through their local Extension office.

Newport News MG Volunteers provide horticultural education to NN citizens, often in partnership with many of our community organizations:

In 2019, 60 active Newport News Volunteers contributed 6000 hours of direct educational contact to its citizens. EMG volunteers serve their community all across the Commonwealth.

NNEMGs are a part of the Newport News Unit of VCE which conducts programs in three areas:  Agriculture and Natural Resources (including horticulture), 4-H, and Family and Consumer Science (FCS).
