and educational happenings occur around the Tidewater and surrounding areas.

Newport News Master Gardeners Speakers Bureau offers knowledgeable
speakers on horticultural matters. To discuss a topic and/or schedule a
speaker, call 591-4838.

Grin and Grow Children's Programs for 2009
Location: In Riverview Farm Park, at the intersection of
Menchville Road and Youngs Road.
Information: All programs are held on the picnic tables near the
Grin and Grow Garden from 11 am to 12 noon. The programs involve a brief
lesson integrated with hands on activities and are followed by refreshments.
The programs are for children aged 5 to 8 with parents accompanying their
children.
- June 13th, Five Senses Hunt. This program will be on
understanding how the five senses relate to the garden. A scavenger
hunt will be part of the lesson.
- No programs in July or August.
- September 12th, Fly Away. This program will be on
butterflies and their life cycles. The children will discuss a
butterfly story and make a butterfly puppet.
- October 10th, Our Feathered Friends. This program will be
on songbirds and which ones migrate. The varieties of food that birds
eat will be demonstrated. Hands on activities to help feed the birds
will be included.

- 24th through September 9th each Wednesday (9-11 am) Drop-in
and Dig! Families with children are invited to drop-in and
participate in simple, easy to learn gardening tasks und the guidance of
Children's Garden staff and volunteers at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens,
1800 Lakeside Ave., Richmond. These family-oriented gardening experiences

- 2nd (6:30 pm) Beat the Heat with Organic Gardening!
Presented by Lisa Ziegler In Newport News. Come learn what steps to take
that will have your gardening smiling in the face of heat and drought.

- 6th (6:30 pm) Start Now for Spring Blooms! Presented by
Lisa Ziegler In Newport News. If you want to have gorgeous snapdragons or
sweet peas next spring, now is the time to get started with your seeds
indoors to plant in fall! Come learn what seeds to start indoors for fall
and how easy it is! Includes seed starting with soil blocking instruction

- 12th (10-11:30 am) Easy Propagating Techniques.
Learn techniques for successful seed starting and perennial division; and
also how to take cuttings from your existing plants. You can also
